Bangladeshi cricketer Imrul Kayes has officially announced his retirement from Test and first-class cricket, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career. The seasoned left-handed batsman expressed that he concluded his red-ball career without any regrets. Despite stepping away from the longer format, Kayes remains committed to white-ball cricket, including participating in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Dhaka Premier League (DPL), and T20 matches in the National Cricket League (NCL).

Reflecting on his journey in Test cricket, Kayes acknowledged the challenges he faced, particularly the uncertainty surrounding his selection. “It was tough not knowing if I would be part of the next match or series,” he shared. Nevertheless, he emphasized leaving the format with a sense of peace and determination to enjoy the remainder of his cricket career. “I aim to perform well in the upcoming white-ball formats and enjoy my cricket,” Kayes stated.

The final chapter of his first-class career came to a close at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, where his team, Khulna, suffered a nine-wicket loss to Dhaka. Despite the somber conclusion, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) honored Kayes with a commemorative crest in recognition of his contributions to the sport.

A Career of Ups and Downs

Imrul Kayes' Test career, spanning from 2008 to 2019, included 39 matches where he amassed 1,797 runs at an average of 24.28, with a highest score of 150. His achievements in the format featured three centuries and four half-centuries. Despite his talent, Kayes often found himself in and out of the national team, a situation that added complexity to his career. However, he chose not to dwell on missed opportunities or inconsistent selection.

“It was all destined, and there is no point in talking about it now. I never claimed to be perfect, but perhaps more consistent performances could have led to more chances,” Kayes reflected. His Test debut came against South Africa in 2008, and his last appearance was against India in 2019 at Eden Gardens, where Bangladesh suffered an innings defeat.

A Distinguished First-Class Record

Beyond his international Test career, Kayes compiled an impressive first-class record with 7,930 runs in 137 matches, including 20 centuries and 27 half-centuries, at an average of 33.74. His contributions to Bangladesh cricket have left a lasting mark, even as he moves on from the red-ball game.

In white-ball cricket, Kayes has also showcased commendable performances. He accumulated 2,434 runs in 78 ODIs at an average of 32.02, with four centuries and 16 half-centuries. Additionally, in T20 Internationals, he scored 119 runs from 14 matches.

Future Plans and Life Beyond Red-Ball Cricket

Looking ahead, Imrul Kayes plans to spend more time in Australia, where his family currently resides. “I live in Australia most of the time now and play Premier Division cricket there. I am also planning to establish a coaching academy,” he revealed. While his retirement marks the end of his Test and first-class cricket journey, it also signals a new chapter filled with opportunities in coaching and playing white-ball formats.

Representing Bangladesh in Test cricket will remain a cherished part of Kayes’ life, despite the challenges and uncertainties he faced. His determination and resilience have inspired many, and his legacy will endure in the annals of Bangladesh cricket.
