In a thrilling T20 clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Pakistan found themselves on the losing end after being dismissed for 134, with Haris Rauf being the final wicket to fall via a run-out. Despite their efforts, Australia’s second-string pace attack showcased their depth and efficiency, proving capable of handling the challenge even in the absence of their frontline seamers, who were rested ahead of the pivotal India Test series.

Man-of-the-Match Performance

Leading Australia’s charge was 28-year-old pacer Johnson, who emerged as the man-of-the-match. Reflecting on the opportunity, he said, “It’s an opportunity I don’t take lightly. I’m privileged to be wearing the green and gold. You never know when your last game is going to be for Australia, so every game is a bonus. Hopefully, I can play a couple more. It’s a different bowling unit than we’re used to for Australia, and hopefully we’re doing a good enough job.”

A Fiery Start by Australia

Electing to bat first, Australia’s opening batsmen, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Short, launched an aggressive attack on Pakistan’s bowlers. Within just 15 balls, they combined for five boundaries and three sixes, propelling the hosts to 50 runs in only 3.1 overs. This rapid start set the tone for a high-scoring encounter.

Pakistan’s Fightback

However, Pakistan soon found their stride, thanks to Haris Rauf’s incisive bowling. Rauf claimed the wicket of Fraser-McGurk for 20, who fell to a mistimed cross-batted shot, and dismissed captain Josh Inglis for a duck just two deliveries later with a stunning catch by Sufiyan Muqeem. Pakistan’s pace attack tightened their grip as Abbas Afridi dismissed Short for 32, deceiving him with a slower ball.

Sufiyan Muqeem added to Australia’s woes by taking out Marcus Stoinis for 14, who had previously benefitted from dropped catches by Salman Agha and Shaheen Afridi. Glenn Maxwell, who endured a top-edge that struck his helmet, attempted to bolster the innings but was caught out on 21, also off Muqeem’s bowling, leaving Australia at a precarious 95-5.

Tim David’s Resilience

Tim David took advantage of a missed opportunity by Babar Azam and struck two powerful fours off Rauf in the 15th over. However, Rauf secured his third wicket by bowling David out and then dismissed Xavier Bartlett to bring his T20I tally to 107 wickets, tying him with Shadab Khan for Pakistan’s all-time record.

A Tight Contest

Australia’s batting faltered despite their explosive start, ending their innings at 147-9. Pakistan’s bowlers, particularly Rauf (4-22) and Abbas Afridi (3-17), played pivotal roles in containing the hosts. However, Pakistan’s chase fell short as Australia’s bowlers, backed by disciplined fielding, managed to stifle their efforts.

The T20 series stands at 1-1 after Pakistan’s earlier 29-run defeat in a rain-affected opener. The decisive third and final match will be held in Hobart on Monday, promising an exciting conclusion to an already gripping series.
